About this tool

The checker reads hreflang annotations from the page’s <link> tags and its HTTP Link header, validates each code (catching mistakes such as en-UK instead of en-GB), then fetches up to 12 alternate versions to confirm they return 200, are self-canonical and link back to the page you entered.

Google ignores hreflang pairs that are not confirmed from both sides, so missing return links are the most common reason country pages show in the wrong market. To create a new set of tags, use the hreflang tag generator.

Frequently asked questions

Why must hreflang tags link back?

Return links prove that both pages agree they are alternates. Without them, anyone could claim to be another site’s translation, so Google ignores one-sided tags.

Is en-UK a valid code?

No. The ISO country code for the United Kingdom is GB, so use en-GB.

Do I need x-default?

It is optional but recommended. It names the page for visitors whose language or country does not match any version, such as a global or country-selector page.
