About this tool

Every extra redirect adds a round trip before the page loads and can dilute the signals passed to the final URL. The checker requests your URL without following redirects automatically, records each hop and its status code, then reads the headers of the final response.

It flags chains of more than one hop, temporary (302/307) redirects used for permanent moves, a final URL that is not HTTPS, a missing HSTS header and any X-Robots-Tag: noindex that would keep the page out of search. Press release links often pass through tracking redirects – check that they end on the right, indexable page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a 301 and a 302 redirect?

A 301 (or 308) says the move is permanent, so search engines transfer the old URL’s signals to the new one. A 302 (or 307) says the move is temporary, so the old URL may stay indexed.

How many redirects are too many?

One hop is normal – for example http to https. Two or more hops slow the page down; update links and rules so they point straight at the final URL. Google follows up to 10 hops.

Why does the tool fetch the URL from your server?

Browsers block web pages from reading other sites’ headers, so the request is made by our server. Only public addresses can be checked and nothing is stored.
